Writing The Shortest History of California was a fun challenge. There is so much to "cover" that I had to let go of the idea of coverage. Instead, I focused on structure, unpacking the seven layers of California history, formed as each successive entity asserted its control over the state: Geological, Native, European, Mexican, American, Californian, and Global.

And each of those entities—and many others—remain. The layers don't stay buried. They resurface, tectonically, culturally, socially.
